I'm intrigued how the focus of this particular issue is being so blatantly manipulated. We heard little to nothing on this during Obama's administration.

It's weird, right? We called Obama the deporter in chief. His immigration policies were horrifying.

it makes a lot more sense now, why the Latinx community had such a hard time embracing a Dem during the 2016 elections.

There are so many intersecting issues at play.

Congress long ago should have passed a reasonable immigration reform law, but Republicans aren't interested because "drugs at the border" is an easy call-and-response to energize the GOP base. Democrats are perpetually incapable of articulating a coh er rent response (just under 90% of drugs are brought in by and used by Americans) and the US needs a simple path to legal immigration that would also provide some relief for labor shortages that are clearly a long-term issue.

Americans are adamant about wanting humane immigration policies, but they vote either on partisan grounds or personal interest...immigration is far down the priority list.

Biden's triangulation to center-right to counter attacks from the right in 2024 on a variety of policies is disheartening, but not surprising.

Biden has the electorate that has. He needs to keep moderate Republicans, Independents, and he knows the left will vote against the GOP no matter what he does. The Democratic party is hemmoraging Black, Asian, and Hispanic working class voters to the GOP. Biden can't count on GenZers who support reasonable immigration to show up (only 27% voted in the midterms). Maybe they'll defy the odds in 2024, but it's a longshot.

These are not excuses, just explanations of reality. Empathy isn't high on the list of priorities for likely voters.

There are so many broken institutions in this country, and so many donor-captured politicians, but until/unless we vote in people who will change the status quo, the best case scenario is that fascism is kept at bay for 4 more years.
