I know quite a bit about it. I've followed Bukele since he took office as part of my Latin America coverage. Dude is a great speaker and super charismatic. And despite his lifting of many rights under more than two years of marital law, he has a ton of support for making El Salvador safer. His popularity will likely wane as he begins to be seen as selling the country out to the U.S., though.
The CECOT facility is horrifying. Families have to pay for the detainees' care and a lot more because the country can't afford those mega prisons. He's looking to the U.S. to help sustain them financially. That's what he gets out of the deal. Plus, we will then ignore that a lot of people in his prisons are innocent. They just haven't had a day in court. The government rounds them up and locks them up without due process.
I'm watching this presser on TikTok with him in the WH with trump and the media is utterly FAILING the moment. Stephen Miller was allowed to gaslight and LIE with NO pushback. trump and Bukele were also lying and the media is just letting it go. It's egregious.
