Thanks important story. Suicide is in Bushnell’s words, “about to engage in an extreme act of protest but, compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers, it’s not extreme at all” is what people feel they’re left with in the face of the government’s immense power to squash liberty after due process is eviscerated.

When in that environment, I'm not surprised people consider it. It's torture.

Yes, a torture program that is maliciously installed after emancipation to criminalize communities of color and politically disenfranchising huge chunks of minority voters which the Robert's court amplifies after Shelby in 2013 as a consequence of the Bush V Gore putsch.

This may be the straw that breaks me, Arturo. We in Central Illinois need guidance on how to better advocate for peoples living in our country who have immigrated here. When I try to speak with my Hispanic friends about the issue, they shut down or gently say “I am so tired. Please don’t speak of these things.” What can I do?

It's tough right now. We have to reset people when they say they are tired. I keep trying to speak to people outside of my community. So many of them are misinformed. Teaching them the truth is but one way to start us on path to a more humane approach. One thing is certain, we need more accountability for CBP, DHS, ICE, and all other agencies.

Check with your ACLU affiliate and local county. Our ACLU puts out this

And our county puts out this document https://www.smcgov.org/ceo/rapid-response-hotline

Do we know which officials initially said the suicide took place out of view of the cameras? What made them come clean?

Not yet. They also didn't name the agent who claimed to do the inspections but didn't. The OPR is a separate office from the Border Patrol. They are who issued this first report.

This is gross negligence and all of those involved should be charged with some degree of manslaughter.

I'll also point out that the only group who routinely advocates traffic stops to make communities safer are those in law enforcement. No one else believes in traffic stops for public safety, and stops are generally used as a broad pretext to speculatively stop and search BIPOC people. Too often it ends in that stopped person's fatality. Now, we see that these stops aren't just deadly at the scene, they're deadly after the fact in holding too.

Sadly, this type of gross negligence is far too common in immigration facilities.

Damn. As a child of recent immigrants, I admit to being woefully uninformed. Thanks for keeping the spotlight and searing heat on these bastards, Arturo.
