White House Doubles Down on Targeting Free Speech

The Trump administration argues that speech criticizing him and his polices is hate speech

After the murder of Charlie Kirk, the idea of what is and isn’t hate speech is being bastardized in an attempt to silence dissent. Allowing the villainization of nonwhite groups using racial slurs and stereotypes, as Kirk often did, is apparently acceptable to the White House. But criticisms of government policies, such as those in the United States and Israel, are somehow intolerable.

The U.S. has gone from the bipartisan efforts to label any criticisms against a government committing genocide as “antisemitism” (anti-Jewish hate), to now labeling any speech that criticizes the Trump administration's racist polices a “demonization” of the president. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has officially taken the baton to baselessly claim that so-called “hateful rhetoric” by “leftists” who scrutinize how the agency is conducting itself is causing violence against agents and Trump supporters.

“Following the evil act of political violence in the country this week and two brutal assaults on our brave ICE law enforcement last week, we are once again calling on the media and the far left to stop the hateful rhetoric directed at President Trump, those who support him, and our brave DHS law enforcement,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin today.

While they argue that Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX-30) comparing ICE to “slave patrols” and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz referring to ICE as the “modern-day Gestapo,” is hate speech, they’re ignoring that the vast majority of hate speech seen online is anti-Black, Latinophobic, transphobic, and homophobic. Meanwhile, as they also claim that Trump, his supporters, and federal agencies are the targets of hate speech, they’re also ignoring that Black people are the group most targeted by hate crimes, largely due to the rhetoric of people like Kirk.

As the media whitewashes real and actualized racism and hate, the federal government is targeting and accusing elected officials of hate speech. DHS has also targeted Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA-7) for calling ICE agents “deranged,” Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA-14) for comparing them to a “KGB officer in Russia,” and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson for calling ICE agents “secret police.” The agency is accusing them of “inspiring” violence.

“This demonization is inspiring violence across the country. Our ICE officers are facing a more than 1000% increase in assaults against them. We have to turn down the temperature before someone else is killed. This violence must end,” McLaughlin continued.

This comes as the Trump administration has taken thousands of agents investigating domestic terrorism cases and repurposed them to conduct immigration enforcement operations. Nowhere are they discussing the radicalization of young white men, likely because it’s mostly happening on their side of the court, nor are they discussing the explosion of hate groups that are directly connected to modern conservatism, as noted by members of the groups' rhetoric and support for far-right extremist ideas. Ideas echoed daily by the White House.

“In March of this year, agents and intelligence analysts were transferred out of the FBI’s Domestic Terrorism Operations Section, which supports domestic terror investigations at the Bureau’s fifty-five field offices,” said Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) in a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel on Monday. “Moreover, agents across the Bureau, including those assigned to the Joint Terrorism Task Forces responsible for investigating both domestic and international terrorist threats, were reassigned from their duties to assist in the President’s immigration crackdown.”

DHS even accused the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of hate speech for comparing an immigration detention center to an internment camp used during World War II. Everything they accuse the public of is as asinine as suggesting that Cudahy Vice Mayor Cynthia Gonzalez in southeast Los Angeles County “called for criminal gangs to commit violence against our brave ICE law enforcement,” an assertion that did not occur and DHS is taking out of context.

DHS alleges that Gonzalez sought violence against ICE in a now-deleted video on social media. While she was calling on all members of the Latino community in L.A. to protest, she said, in part, "You guys tag everything up, claiming hood, and now that your hood is being invaded by the biggest gang there is, there ain't a peep out of you. It's everyone else that's not about the gang life and out there protesting and speaking up."

As manipulative as federal agencies have been under Trump, particularly DHS, spreading lies about noncitizens such as Kilmar Abrego Garcia, Mahmoud Khalil, and countless others that didn’t get national attention, these latest manipulations in the wake of Kirk’s death signal that the U.S. government is manufacturing consent to target innocent people, including lawmakers, citizens, and noncitizens alike, for nothing more than speaking their minds, not advocating for violence.

As legacy media provides an assist by whitewashing how hateful Kirk was and telling those who don’t participate in hate speech online to “tone down” the rhetoric, those who traffic in hate have only become more emboldened. Corporate-owned news is giving cover to the same crowd calling for civil war while blaming non-white people and trans people for something one of their own, a white man, did to their newest and holiest of holy racists.
