VIDEOS: Shadow Hearing: ICE Kidnapping Civilians, Racially Profiling Latinos
A shadow hearing in the House covered many of the inconsistencies, lies, and propaganda used to target Latino and Black communities

On Thursday, House Democrats held a shadow hearing titled “Kidnapped and Disappeared: Trump’s Assault Destroys U.S. Families and Communities" to discuss many issues surrounding the White House’s mass deportation policies. The hearing was held in light of Republicans' refusal to address the myriad unconstitutional actions and the administration's ignoring of various court orders.

Led by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), the hearing covered many topics, including the story of one witness whose husband of 13 years was detained and deported after being racially profiled earlier this year. Many experts were present at the hearing, noting the social, economic, and personal impacts current policies are having on families and their respective communities. Communities that are struggling to protect their neighbors from federal government overreach into local law enforcement activities, resulting in thousands of family separations.
One of the witnesses present at the hearing was Chelsea White. Her husband of 13 years, Hilario Martinez-Garcia, was detained by ICE during a traffic stop at what seemed like a DUI checkpoint, according to White. After responding to a few questions about whether she or Martinez-Garcia had been drinking, the officer then notified a superior, who detained them until ICE could take him into custody. Martinez-Garcia had been in the country for 25 years and has three children with White and a fourth on the way. White has set up a GoFundMe here.
Rep. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia (D-IL) spoke out about the violence seen across Chicago at the hands of federal agents assisting ICE with Trump’s mass deportation agenda. Garcia referred to ICE actions as “violent” and called ICE agents “thugs” on several occasions. He explained exactly why he did so, exposing how Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem raided a home and took two U.S. citizens into custody. Garcia also discussed how the killing of a migrant was unjustified based on publicly available video footage.
Policy Director at the American Immigration Council, Nayna Gupta, spoke about various issues at the hearing. She validated many of the points Rep. Garcia made and highlighted the mistreatment of Latinos on the street and noncitizens in detention centers. Gupta also spoke about the attacks on due process and the harm it causes to both citizens and noncitizens. Gupta also discussed how ICE's actions are detrimental to the public’s trust in law enforcement.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) spoke to how ICE operates without warrants and how the White House is using expedited removals to subvert due process. In her response, Gupta discussed how the judicial process in the immigration system is far from just. Gupta again highlights how ICE is more focused on meeting quotas and not concerned with who they’re taking into custody. Rep. Tlaib then jumped in to discuss the inhumanity of how deportees are treated.
The biggest moment of the hearing came when Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-IL) had her chance to speak. Ramirez, known for being outspoken about inhumanity, pulled no punches. She too spoke of the unlawful actions seen in videos across social media that led to the killing of Silverio Villegas Gonzalez and how DHS’s account doesn’t align with publicly available video.
Rep. Ramirez asked Gupta about the lawlessness behind ICE’s tactics and spoke to how the blurring of lines between the separation of powers is dangerous. Gupta explained precisely why it's so problematic for citizens and noncitizens alike and how it subjects civilians to unnecessary harassment just for appearing Latino or speaking Spanish.
In this clip, Ramirez spoke up about the myriad economic benefits of having immigrants in our communities. Professor of Economics at Washington College, Robert Lynch, validated Ramirez with testimony spotlighting the benefits of immigration. Lynch explained how taxes paid into programs like Social Security and Medicaid by immigrants benefit U.S. citizens.

Thank you so much for reporting on this.
These things are infuriating, and I can't believe our government is actually forcing people into hiding.
I don't know when this will end, but I know it gets harder and harder to imagine forgiving those who have visited this upon our communities and our neighbors.
My Rep! Sometimes I feel like I should move to another state, just because she & Patty Murray have pretty much always understood the assignment ... OTOH, Cantwell is kind of a tech-sis ...
