Neoliberalism Killed Roe
The incremental shift to the political right led to the end of abortion rights in the United States
While conservatives freak out about the leak of Justice Samuel Alito’s 98-page opinion declaring “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” the real issue isn’t the celebration on the political right, nor is their motivation. What got us here was complacency by the party that was supposed to stand up to the open Christo-fascism of the Republican Party.
Here’s the thing, Republicans have been openly saying this was their plan all along regarding abortion. The party of the political right has embraced a form of ethnic nationalism that’s based on their white-washed version of the Bible. The same people who believe that “God” or “Jesus” has their hand over the United States protecting it over every other nation.
They believe the Bible as if Jesus was “American”.
The ignorance is astounding yet powerful. Similar to how the KKK hides behind the cross - even if it’s on fire - to pretend the Bible was meant to preserve the “white race” - a construct invented centuries after the Bible. Christo-fascists, as we regularly refer to them in Latin America, use the Bible to preach a bully pulpit. Missionaries traverse the Earth and do the same.
Inter-racial marriage to them is a bad thing (look out Clarence Thomas). If you’re gay or trans they would prefer you didn’t exist. Even non-white people aren’t accepted unless they embrace a level of assimilation only a fool like Enrique Tarrio would promote. Make no mistake, the white conservative evangelical wants to ban abortion to protect the growth of white people in the US.
What they seek is cultural genocide. They want a society that conforms to what the violent and loud minority seeks. They act as if the US Constitution was based on the Bible when it’s quite clear that the opposite is true. The United States was designed as a secular (and racist) society and they know it. They’re trying to redesign the country in some arbitrary image.
A society the vast majority of US citizens don’t want. They know that non-white people suffer from healthcare malpractice more than white people. Those same white people will still have access to abortions because privilege and generational wealth provide for them. They know that Black, Latino, and Indigenous women will suffer more by banning abortion.
This is about letting non-white people die the same way they did when they declared the pandemic as not a big deal or that it’s over as Black, Latino, and Indigenous people suffer and die more than white people do. The reality is, that the establishment has failed us again. Much like it has done with immigration, racial justice, healthcare, voting rights, and yes, abortion.
They’re killing us incrementally. They’re destroying our communities and subjecting our families to inhumane conditions in various ways. Democrats are just as guilty as Republicans for not putting up a bigger fight. The political left uses many issues as props to garner votes. They don’t legislate to correct them because they fear they wouldn’t have a platform otherwise.
They’ve bowed to Christo-fascists long enough.
That’s what neoliberalism is. It’s representative of the gradual acceptance of right-wing fascism in the truest sense of the word. As I recently said on the Latino Media Collective radio show: “Trump took us ten steps backward and Biden brought us one step forward. Liberals call that progress.”
We went from “kids in cages” to “child detention centers” simply because of the last election. Neoliberals act as if we're moving forward. Meanwhile, the boat is still sinking.
